During twenty fifth anniversary (Silver Jubilee year) of India's Independence, a central scheme for grant of pension to the freedom fighters and their families fro the Central Revenues was introduced by the Gvernment of India. The scheme commenced from 15th August, 1972 and provided for grant of permission to living freedom fighter's or their (as of the martyrs) eligible dependents. In 1980, the scheme was liberallized and renamed as "Swatantrata Sainik Samman Pension Scheme, 1980". It was made effective from 1st August, 1980.
